Available spots
Course description
Suitable for beginners and those with a little experience, this 6 week course in stained glass & copper foiling offers the opportunity to learn the traditional craft of stained glass. This is a hands-on course, covering all processes including glass cutting, leading, soldering, cementing and polishing your piece. The main benefit of an extended course is the opportunity to make more than one piece, allowing you to consolidate your skills and get more creative with your designs for lead and glass. You will have the option to explore both traditional techniques and the modern copper foiling process. Choose from a large range of templates that will enable you to get a good grounding in the core skills or design your own with your tutor’s guidance. Learn about different types of glass and how to choose colours and textures to suit your style. This course is an opportunity to learn a new skill in a relaxed environment. Materials are included for your first project up to 20cm square, and you will learn during this process where and how to buy materials for further projects. We will have some stocks available for purchase, but there is far greater availability at a local store, where you can get a 10% discount on glass as a student on this course. You can expect to spend approximately two weeks on your first project. You do not need to bring any tools, we will have everything you need. Maximum of six students. Minimum age to attend is 16. The courses starts on Wednesday 19th February 10am-12:30pm and runs for 6 weeks. Essential Info Please wear closed-toed shoes and tie back long hair. Please wear clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty or bring an apron. Due to the use of lead it is recommended that pregnant women do not attend. A soldering flux derived from animal fat is necessary on this course, so regrettably it is not vegan. Hot drinks and biscuits will be provided. About the teacher: Catherine Dunstan is an award-winning glass artist based here in Staple Hill. Catherine specialises in pattern-making in glass, creating sculpture and wall art featuring 3D kaleidoscopic patterns. She exhibits and teaches both nationally and internationally and takes great joy in sharing her enthusiasm for glass with her students. She is the author of Creative and Professional Development for Glass Artists.
