Basket Weaving for Beginners

Course description

Make your own mini frame basket on our beginner weaving day workshop with basketmaker Mary Lewis, who will introduce you to the ancient craft of basket weaving. Mary's supportive, relaxed teaching style will guide you through the various stages of making your basket. You will gain an understanding of how the willow behaves as you weave and, after the final trimming up, you will have a useful basket you will be proud to take home. You will learn about the simple tools that are used in basketry and some basic weaving patterns that can be applied to a wide range of baskets in the future. Using Somerset and homegrown willow, this basket is made by creating a frame and then weaving around it. This is one of the earliest forms of basket making, where the shape and size of the basket is dependent on the bent willow ribs that are added first. These baskets are lovely for displaying fruit or for collecting eggs. All tools and materials will be provided. Please wear closed toe shoes and clothes that you don't mind getting a bit grubby.

Cancellation Policy

Cancellations by Creative Space: • In the event we need to cancel the course or workshop for whatever reason you will be offered a full refund or the option to transfer to another date free of charge. Cancellations by the attendee: • For courses booked and paid directly through Creative Space a refund of 85% will be given up to 14 days prior to the course start date. The fee is to allow for admin and payment processing costs. If a student cancels within 14 days we are unable to offer a refund. • If your circumstances change e.g. due to work commitments, childcare issues, moving away etc. a refund will not be given within 14 days of the workshop. • We consider all requests on an individual basis, depending on the circumstances. Rescheduling: • You may transfer to another course or workshop up to 14 days before the start date.
